Name: Beatrice Domond
Age: 26
Hometown: Delray Beach, Fla.
Now lives: In a studio apartment in the East Village section of Manhattan
Claim to fame: Ms. Domond is a professional skateboarder and the first woman to be sponsored by Supreme, the streetwear brand. Thrasher Magazine included her on its 2019 list of “Top 10 Women & Non-Binary Skaters,” and Highsnobiety recently called her the “future of skateboarding.” “Skating for Supreme is really just the best thing,” Ms. Domond said. “All my favorite skaters ride for them, and a ton of legends have worked there, so I’m just hyped to be a part of it.” She also holds sponsorships from Vans, FA, Venture, Stance, Spitfire, SKF and Boys of Summer.
Big Break: Ms. Domond grew up skating at recreational parks in Delray Beach, often with her mother and younger brother tagging along to film her. When she was 17, Ms. Domond emailed some clips to William Strobeck, a well-known filmmaker in the skating world, who was so impressed that he included her in “Cherry,” an influential skate video he directed for Supreme in 2014. Mr. Strobeck also forwarded her clips to Jason Dill, a skater and a co-founder of FA, a skateboard company, who agreed to sponsor her.
Latest project: Last August, Ms. Domond was one of the 200 people selected to design a steamer trunk to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Louis Vuitton. Her design — a wooden truck with skate wheels — is on display at the “200 Trunks, 200 Visionaries” exhibition in Asnières, France. “That was probably my first real project where they approached me as an artist and not a skateboarder, which I thought was super cool,” she said.
Next thing: Last year, Ms. Domond designed two shoes for Vans: a black loafer with a debossed floral pattern, and a performance Ave Pro model with icy blue soles. It was the first time a Black woman had her name on a pair of Vans. She is releasing two new shoes for Vans this spring.
Behind the camera: Ms. Domond is known to bring her manual-focus Nikon FA camera on skate trips. Her first self-published photobook, “Fly On The Wall” was released in 2020 and featured intimate photos of her friends and their travels.
